YouTube unveiled today that its mobile app will get a dark theme. The feature which launched in 2017 for desktop was a major hit, and the company has finally decided to implement the dark theme in their app.
The new feature will launch today for the iOS app, whereas the feature in the Android app will be coming “soon”.
How do I access the dark theme on the YouTube app?
The dark theme on YouTube is easy to access on desktop. All you have to do is click your Google icon in the top right corner and enable “dark theme”. On the mobile app, it’s a little less intuitive, but still fairly straightforward. You still have to select your Google icon, however you have to scroll to “Settings”, which is where you will find a toggle for the dark theme.
With the dark theme enabled, the YouTube experience changes from mostly white to black and gray as you browse, search, and navigate the app.
Having a dark theme enabled in your apps has multiple advantages. It can help you reduce strain on your eyes if you’re watching for a long time or in a dark room. It can also help your battery life as studies have shown that it takes more power to light up brighter-colored pixels on a screen.
YouTube has said that the dark theme feature will also reduce glare and allow people to focus on the content instead of their searing eyeballs.
YouTube is the latest in a long line of apps to implement a dark theme. These apps include Reddit, Spotify, iBooks, Twitter, and more.
