Smartisan is a Chinese mobile manufacturer which started in 2012, however it’s already setting world records. The company has just unveiled its latest flagship, the Smartisan R1, which is the first phone to feature 1 TB of built-in UFS 2.1 storage.
It’s a feat that huge smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Google, Huawei, and many more are working on. Yet a fairly unknown company beat them all to the punch.
It’s still early to confirm anything, but recent rumors about the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 suggest the device may come with a 512GB variant. Still, that’s only half the internal storage that the Smartisan R1 offers.
The Smartisan R1 specs
The huge amount of storage isn’t all that comes with the phone either. The Smartisan R1 sports the newest Snapdragon 845, along with 6GB of RAM inside 64GB and 128GB variants, and 8GB of RAM inside 128GB and 1 TB variants.
The device also features:
- A 6.17-inch FHD display, with a resolution of 2242 x 1080, and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9
- Corning Gorilla Glass 3
- Adreno 630 GPU
- Dual rear cameras – Primary: 12MP Sony IMX363 Sensor (f/1.8), Secondary: 20MP Sony IMX350 Sensor (f/1.75)
- Front camera: 24MP (f/2.0), complete with AI real-time algorithms and ArcSoft ray algorithms
- 3600 mAh battery, rechargeable via QuickCharge 4.0
- Support for Bluetooth 5.0, dual-sim, global LTE bands
- Comes with a USB Type-C port
Smartisan packed some seriously impressive specs into their latest flagship. Yet the R1 is also missing a few key features that may deter some consumers.
For one, the device has no IP certification, so even a small splash of liquid could render the device useless. It also follows many other manufacturers in doing away with the beloved headphone jack.
However for most users, these things can be overlooked for the other features that come with the device.
The 3600 mAh battery inside the Smartisan R1 is more than enough juice to last you all day. Yet with Quick Charge 4.0, the R1 will keep going for longer, much faster. This technology from Qualcomm is supported by only 5 devices currently, including the Nubia Z17 and the Razer 1. It boasts 5 hours of battery life in only 5 minutes due to a secondary power management chip that dissipates heat quicker.

Smartisan R1 design
In addition to all of its internals, the Smartisan R1 looks pretty stylish in its own right.
It features a 3D glass back, which has the Smartisan Hammer logo doubling up as the fingerprint scanner. It also features a pressure sensitive display that is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The device is cased within a grade 7 aluminum frame.
The display has a very small notch that reminds us of the one on the Essential Phone 1, and which houses the front camera and earpiece. There’s a very small chin on the device, so having enough screen real estate shouldn’t be a problem.
Smartisan R1 price and availability
The design and specs look great, however the Smartisan R1 variants come with somewhat hefty price tags. Here are the four devices to choose from in the lineup:
- 6GB RAM + 64GB – CNY3,499 ($549 USD / $705 CAD)
- 6GB RAM + 128GB – CNY3,999 ($627 USD / $805 CAD)
- 8GB RAM + 128GB – CNY4,499 ($705 USD / $905 CAD)
- 8GB RAM + 1TB – CNY8,848 ($1388 USD / $1780 CAD)
While the specs are certainly impressive, the cost may be too much for some users. The OnePlus 6 and Huawei Honor 10 offer similar specs at a lower price point. But the real question remains: is the 1 TB storage enough to sway you to fork over roughly $1500? We’ll let you decide on that one.
